Get plenty of protein that sticks to your ribs

You have always heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Abundant research points to the fact that those who eat a regular breakfast tend to be healthier and live longer, in general, than those who don't.

For myself, I know that I do and feel much better throughout the day when I have a hearty breakfast, however, I have always wondered about the appropriate timing of breakfast.

How soon should we eat breakfast?
We're often told to eat within an hour of waking, but I know that there are many people who have absolutely no desire to eat for a few hours after waking. I am one of those people.

Never one to believe everything I read or what the so-called "experts" say, I've often wondered if it really is imperative to good health to eat so soon after waking, as so many health and nutrition "experts" insist.

Personally, I usually just don't feel like eating for at least an hour or more after waking. I often find that I'm hungry about 2 to 2 ½ hours after getting up.

I believe in listening to my body
Whenever possible I try to listen to the feedback and indicators my body gives me, and honor its needs and requests. Therefore, I often do wait to eat breakfast until I've been up for a while and I feel like it.

We're all different, each with unique metabolism
Some of us are "morning people" and some of us are not! I fall into the latter category. While morning people are "up-and-at-'em, finishing by lunch time, the "not morning people" often like to lounge about, sipping a warm beverage for a while, and not care to do much of anything, including eat, until well after a few cups of warm beverage and some time to get moving.

But waiting until after noon is a disaster for me
That said, on the rare occasions I have waited until after noon to eat, I have regretted it. Especially if I must do anything requiring much physical movement.

If I wait too long to eat, then suddenly it feels as though my blood sugar comes crashing down and I get weak, light headed, and grumpy.

If I must get out and about early then I force myself to eat before I leave because I know I can't wait until lunch to eat. I can usually force down a hard boiled egg and a handful of blueberries.

Pack a breakfast for later
A simple solution for the "non-morning person" so you don't have to force yourself to eat early if you have to leave home early is to heat up a Breakfast Burrito or Shredded Beef Burrito in the microwave, wrap it in foil before you go, and eat it later, when you're hungry.

Or, plan ahead and make hard boiled eggs to take with you. Add an orange, apple, banana, or avocado and you have a hearty healthy breakfast that packs easily.

What makes a good breakfast?
As with any meal, a good rule of thumb is 1 part protein to 3 or 4 parts plant matter. So two eggs, a slice of cantaloupe and some berries is an excellent breakfast. Our Grass Fed Beef Steak and Egg Breakfast Burritos with an avocado and some salsa or Pico de Gallo make a tasty and healthy morning meal.

Protein is essential
For many people, breakfast consists of nothing but empty carbs. Just look at any hotel's continental breakfast. Unless they offer hard boiled eggs, there is no protein to be found, usually only cereal, bagels, pastries, and breads.

Adequate protein at breakfast is essential for me, especially if I'm going to be engaging in any kind of strenuous physical activity. This past winter I made the mistake of going skiing having eaten only a bowl of oatmeal with fruit, and all my strength and energy were gone after just few runs.

Get good carbs in the form of fruits and vegetables
The best carbs you can eat in the morning come from vegetables and fruit, rather than breads, cereal, or pastries.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not afraid of carbs and sometimes you have to have some good bread with breakfast, it's just that you want to be sure to have plenty of protein and fat as well.

Our Steak and Egg Breakfast Burritos have a flour tortilla, but the carbs are balanced out by the protein and fat in the steak and eggs.

Also remember that fruit juice, even 100% juice has a high glycemic index and can cause blood sugar to spike. And High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) plays absolute havoc with your blood sugar, so make sure any juice you drink doesn't contain HFCS, and keep juice consumption limited.
